Scientific and research activities fall under the statutory duties of the National Gallery Prague as an organization co-financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. Linked to several regular operations of the NGP, science and research also involve the Gallery’s primary activity as a memory institution. The NGP’s main mission is responsible collection management, which requires not only the procurement and physical preservation of primary materials but also their conservation, restoration, and expert processing. It follows that the NGP considers it an urgent priority to carry out scientific and research work in both basic and applied research. The results of these activities are published as monographs, expert studies, and articles to be regularly published via the Information Register of R&D Results (RIV).
Science and research in the National Gallery Prague cover a vast range of the organization’s statutory activities, including many fields and specialisms. Research is conducted in a cross-section of all collections. The NGP cooperates on research projects with universities, other organizations co-financed by the state, and scientific and research institutions.

Effective organizational and administrative cooperation between the subjects carrying out projects and communicating with the grantor is ensured by the Department of Science and Research, divided into four separate sub-departments: the Department of Science and Research, the Publishing Department (publishing house), the Library, and the Archive. The Department of Science and Research is actively involved in the formation of the NGP’s scientific and research work concept, as well as the selection, preparation, and creation of research projects and goals. Continuously, the Department guarantees the activities of the Scientific Council.
The Department of Science and Research coordinates the NGP’s scientific and research activities in all their aspects, serving as a two-way communication mediator between the providers of institutional and dedicated subsidies for scientific and research activities, and the institution proper, represented by individual experts it employs.
The NGP’s research activity is funded on a pay-as-you-go basis from the regular budget, using institutional support (IP DKRVO), financial means procured via participation in public competitions (NAKI, NAKI II, GACR, and others), and other sources of financing.
