The artwork of Filomena Borecká (1977), a Czech artist living in Paris, focuses on themes that are visually difficult to grasp – breathing, relationships, the passage of time. Filomena Borecká expresses herself through drawing, which gives her the opportunity to capture the immediate moment and authentic experience. She lets her drawings come to life on gallery walls, where their lines organically grow through the exhibition space and conquer the surrounding walls. For the National Gallery Prague the artist created a work in situ: a large-scale abstract drawing depicting an “inner landscape” carried by the breath.
The exhibition explores themes of togetherness and mutuality. It highlights the artist’s long-term preoccupation with breath. Through her work, Filomena Borecká points to the deep interconnectedness of all living things. “Breathing in and breathing out have no individual boundaries and are constantly shared,” she reminds us. Through her dynamic drawings and sculptural objects of abstract organic forms, she captures the flow of creative energy, the unceasing spontaneous movement inherent in the pulsation of nature, biological rhythms, and events in the cosmos.
The artist created the multimedia object Phrenos – The Bank of Breath (2011 – present), which involves direct participation of the audience. One can enter its bowels and immerse oneself in sound recordings of human breath, mapping various states of being. The project engages visitors through a questionnaire asking about ideas related to breathing. Phrenos will be displayed until 23 June 2024.
