The painter Josef Bergler (1753–1829), the first director of the Prague art academy had a decisive impact on the emergence of graphic art in Bohemia, both as a teacher and as an extraordinarily productive author. His creations include a collection of New Year’s cards that is truly unique in terms of its extent and quality. From 1806 until his death, Bergler produced them each year. They blend traditional iconographic themes with elements of everyday life and material culture, the grotesque, and humour.
