František Bohumír Zvěřina (1835–1908) ranks among those figures who are referred to as “forgotten” artists. He began his career as a pupil of the landscape painting school of Max Haushofer, but after his expulsion from the Prague Academy he changed course in favour of teaching, and the focus of his output became work for illustrated magazines, where for decades he published drawings from his regular summer holiday travels primarily to the Southern Slavic lands. The graphic arts cabinet presents Zvěřina’s distinctive scenes from the Balkans, whose thematic oddity corresponds effectively with his unique artistic style.
