Graphic art was
the discipline in which the German painter and sculptor Max Klinger (1857—1920),
was fully able to unleash his vivid artistic imagination. He filled his loosely
composed series of scenes with complex sets of ideas in connection with the
fundamental themes of human existence. He drew inspiration from the works of
German composers (Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms), and conceived his series of
prints as visual forms of musical compositions. The graphic arts cabinet
presents a selection from his ensemble Intermezzi (Opus IV, 1881)
and the series On Death (Opus XI, 1889).
