The extensive exhibition will present the oeuvre of one of the most distinguished figures excelling in graphic arts. During his lifetime, the Italian artist, architect, designer and archaeologist Giovanni Battista Piranesi was mainly admired as a brilliant painter of vistas glorifying the beauty and charm of both classical and contemporary Rome. His fascinating cycle “Carceri” (Jails), the disquieting atmosphere and mesmerizing expressivity of which would once enthral many luminaries, such as Victor Hugo, Aldous Huxley, French Surrealists and Marguerite Duras, also attracts much attention. The exhibition will present Piranesiʼs oeuvre in its entirety. Visitors will have the chance to see not only the above-mentioned vistas and sheets from the cycle “Carceri” but also albums devoted to classical monuments, the artistʼs architectonic fantasies and his designs of interior architecture and theoretical treatises. The exhibits held by the National Gallery in Prague will be accompanied by loans from significant state and private collections.
The exhibition, prepared by the **Collection of Prints and Drawings** in cooperation with the **Prague City Archives** will take place under the auspices of the Ambassador of the Italian Republic, J. E. Aldo Amati, the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague and the Italian-Czech Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
