In commemoration of the one hundredth
anniversary of the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the
Oriental Institute and the National Gallery in Prague will bring three
lantern-craft specialists from Kyoto, Japan.
Founded during the Kansei era (1789–1801) in the eastern mountains of
the ancient capital of Kyoto, Kojima Shōten has been making the Kyoto-style
paper lanterns in the traditional manner ever since. Known for durability and simplicity, their
lanterns pleasantly light up evening townscapes, fashioning a distinct feel to
the start of night. We invite you to
watch how these craftsmen make lanterns at the Salm Palace of the National
Gallery in Hradčanské Square next to the Prague Castle (Salm Palace | National Gallery Prague (ngprague.cz).
For this special event, the craftsmen will
demonstrate their skills in the creation of a large lantern (with a diameter of
150 cm!) — using bamboo string, washi
paper, paint, and a special glue. This
demonstration will take place at Salm Palace, to be followed by two academic
lectures the following day in the Headquarters of the Czech Academy of
Sciences. The lectures address the
historic significance of lanterns in Japanese culture and the meaning of
cultural heritage today. There will also
be workshop opportunities to make your own lanterns in the same method and
materials under the guidance of the craftsmen.
For more information, please visit Home / | My Site
(toyosawa4.wixsite.com) and register for the workshop.
The headquarters of the Czech Academy of
Sciences will also house lectures concerning the historical significance of
lanterns in Japanese culture and cultural links to the present. We look forward
to meeting you in late October!
You are also invited to visit the
exhibition of “Japanese Zen paintings from the Kaeru-An collection.” For more details, see ZENGA – Japanese Zen Paintings from the Kaeru-An
