The Czech sculptor Josef Mařatka (1874–1937) was fascinated by the
movements of models in the studio and dancers on stage. He swiftly made pencil
sketches on paper capturing their emotionally strong poses, which he
subsequently used as bases for his sculpted works. Mařatka began to use the
spontaneous drawing method he learned from the French sculptor Auguste Rodin,
under whom he studied from 1901 to 1904. The Graphic Cabinet will present
Mařatka’s drawings of the dancers Carmen Damedoz, Ruth Saint-Denis and Olga
Gzovskaya.
