The exhibition L’Expérience de la nature. Les arts à Prague à la cour de Rodolphe II (The Experience of Nature. The Arts in Prague at the Court of Rudolf II), organized by the Musée du Louvre in collaboration with the National Gallery Prague, will present the Prague court of Emperor Rudolf II as a vibrant hub of artistic and intellectual activity.
The focus is primarily on the relationships between the arts and the study of nature and the natural sciences. The emperor surrounded himself with renowned painters and sculptors, as well as scientists, alchemists, and master craftsmen, such as the Milanese gemstone cutters Miseroni and Castrucci.
The first part of the exhibition will highlight science from the Rudolfine period, its instruments, and illustrations. The second section will examine the deeper symbolism of the science of that era and its links to philosophy and ancient tradition. The third and final part will explore how this newfound interest in nature influenced artistic expression, including painting, drawing, and, most notably, artistic craft. The exhibition will feature around 80 exhibits of exceptional quality from the collections of the Louvre, the National Gallery Prague, and other leading European museums.
