Czech-English Edition

The book casts light on a broad context of ritual customs related to the worshipping of deceased forebears in China and discusses the genre of formal and informal ancestor portraits that loosely combine certain features characteristic of “ancestor portraits” with the visual conventions of secular figural or even literati painting, in connection with a corpus of twenty-one informal portrait paintings from southern China that the National Gallery in Prague received as a gift from Mr. Chang Chien-shyng, a Taiwanese collector, in September 2011, complementing the Gallery’s already-extant collection of formal ancestor portraits. The catalogue for this collection of works, accompanied by a representative selection of formal ancestor portraits and examples of secular figure painting, brings interesting information onChina’s traditional culture, and on its ritual and religious beliefs.
